Finland joined the Axis Powers in declaring war on the Soviet Union on 25 June 1941 in order to regain the territory that was conceded following the Winter War the previous year. The lost territory was quickly occupied, but the Finns chose to hold their regained territory rather than continue with the Axis advance deeper into Soviet territory. Once the tide of war turned in the Soviet favor, Finland then faced a determined offensive in mid-1944 that drove them back from their gained territory but would bring the offensive to a standstill by July. A ceasefire was agreed to shortly afterward.
Finland introduced a grey tunic in 1936. Collar patches would denote the branch of service, green edged in white was for infantry. The equipment pouches were for the standard Russian Mosin Nagant rifle, of which Finland had a stock from when they were part of Russia prior to 1918. Other equipment used was often of German manufacture.
